Mother Nature: The Original Schizophrenic

I love New Mexico. I grew up here and after living in several other states, I've come to the conclusion that NM is home to me. I'm not sure I will live here forever, but for now I am here and I am happy. The seasons are mild. The cost of living is pretty decent. The air is clean and despite it being a desert, it's really nice.

The only thing I don't get about NM though is the freaking weather. Spring this year is holding out on us in the worst way. Usually, by this time of the year, it's starting to warm up which means I can get a head start on my garden.

This year, however, spring has yet to arrive. Over the past few weeks, we have a couple days of 70's and then 40's or worst. It'll be sunny and absolutely lovely, then it turns nasty. I keep getting out my sandals and even gave myself a pedicure so I could wear said sandals with a skirt. Of course, once I do that, I wake up the next day to cold, wet, snowy weather which makes me look at my sandals and skirts with sadness.

Then there is my garden. I love my garden. I can't wait til I can get out into it and get it rototilled and planted. I've been so excited about it that I've started growing my veggies in little makeshift pots so their transition to the garden will be less traumatic this year. Every morning I go out to my sunroom and admire all the little baby plants. They are so happy that they are growing like gangbusters. Some of them are so big that I might even need to transplant them to bigger pots until I can get them into the garden.

But of course, I can't work in the garden when there is 2 inches of snow on the ground. Today the plan was to get lettuce and spinich planted, as well as trimming the grapes and the fruit trees. I couldn't believe what I woke up and saw outside.

Snow was coming down by the bucket full and it is not showing any signs of stopping. It's so cold out that all of my cats are now camped out on my bed. I tried to make the bed, but the little buggars would not move. They have now made a cat nest outta my bedsheets and blankets. I believe they have done this in protest of the not-so-nice weather. Way to go cats. Now I can't even clean up a bit.

So, I guess I will just work on the house today and start some new seedlings. Because it's so cold out, I'm going to fire up my oven and make a roast with some veggies later. Maybe I will sew a bit on a quilt top and some designs I've been tooling around with in my head. I will not be working in my garden. :(

You gotta love schizophrenic mother nature!
