It's good to be loved

It’s good to be loved.

Today while I was at work, I got a call from my best friend in VA. I was so happy to hear from her! Since I’ve been in Alaska, I haven’t really talked to anyone because I don’t have cell phone service here. I must say, I really miss my cell phone, but then again I don’t miss it.

Anyway, she was calling to let me know she was sending me a care package. I asked her whatever for and she said, “Because you need this stuff. You are living in nowhereville and I know you need coffee.” I couldn’t help, but giggle because she knows me all too well. Without my morning java I don’t even make sense to myself.

I said, “oh, well yeah, but you don’t need to send me anything! You need to not worry about me!”

Pah…as if she’d ever listen to me! It reminds me of one of my trips to Boston when we HAD to have lobster on our way home from Maine and I was tired. Haahahah…but that is, of course, another story for another blog….

So she’s right. I have to agree with her. Bethel, Alaska is not famous for being a cheap place, plus I don’t have a car so I have to take a taxi or walk if I want to go anywhere. Now, I love to walk, but walking here just isn’t that much fun.

Throughout our little chat, we discussed my crazy contract, my impending possible move to England and a whole lot of other stuff that may or may not happen once I leave. She told me that she was happy I am happy and that she loved me.

Well, duh! She’s been home sick and she’s running about, and sending me a package! She is completely crazy! She’s supposed to be at home taking care of herself and her family, not worrying about my loony bird ass in Alaska!

I swear, everyone needs just one friend like her in their lives. She’s the kind that would give you her last 20 dollars if that meant you could get a good meal and cup of coffee. She’s always doing the right thing for everyone around her even though sometimes it costs her sanity. She has the moral fortitude of a fierce warrior, yet she has the sweetest, kindest and most gentle heart. She is brilliantly smart and can make you laugh like nobody’s business. Most of my best and funniest adventures have been with this girl which makes me feel blessed to call her my friend.

Anyway, after work I went to the post office to mail a birthday present to the wonderful one over there in jolly olde England. I know I didn’t have to send him one but I wanted to. Ah, the things we do for love! He seemed pleased with that which makes me happy. I figured since our plans to see each other for his birthday got scrapped, it was the least I could do. You know, there is pleasure to be gained by doing nice things for people you care about. I know I sure had a good time putting it together for him even though it wasn’t anything all that special and it took me nearly a week to get it all. Today it got stamped and posted and hopefully will get there before his birthday! Woo hoo!

So while I was at the post office, I asked to see if any of my other packages from home had arrived. See, I got to Bethel and well, realized that I needed more clothes and would be in desperate need of food staples. My parents, those beloved sweet people who raised me, when I made the request for food and clothing, sent me not just one care package, but 13!

I totally know where I get my crazy from! They totally went overboard in sending me stuff and I love it! Today 5 more boxes came filled with happy things from home! They sent my pillows, my warm clothes and food, glorious food! It was like Christmas only better because it was my stuff already!

My father is promising to send me a package a week! I keep thinking, Dad, I don’t eat THAT much, but thank you! Thank you, thank you, thank you, you crazy old man!

They’re watching my house for me as well which is so nice. I know my cats and cavies are being spoiled by my mother and when I get home they won’t want anything to do with me.

It’s good to be loved.
