A whole plate of bacon. Sounds delicious, doesn't it?
Today while I was out shopping with my parents, my father told a tale about the diabetic friend of his who at breakfast one morning ate just that. My father was astonished that someone of his age would be eating such a thing. According to my father, this particular friend never eats sugar or bread.
But he will eat a whole plate of bacon.
I had to laugh because I too can and will sometimes eat a whole plate of bacon. Forget the pancakes or waffles, toast or pan fried potatoes. Gimme the bacon, the sausage and the eggs, by golly! Sounds like to me, that his friend is a long time low carber (and a diabetic to boot).
Turns out this friend of my father's also has total triglycerides of 60. He eats a plate of bacon for breakfast and still has low triglycerides. How amazing!
Normally I would think that particular fact was an anomaly, but given I am armed with knowledge of low carb eating, I am not at all shocked. According to Dr. Atkins, you have to eat fats so your body doesn't store or make fats. It's a pretty simple principle which makes sense when you think about it.
Being overweight, I can attest to this fact. I used to follow the low-fat gospel like it were directly descended from the heavens. I ate grains and pasta like they were going out of style. I avoided fat at all costs. Some how I ended up putting on 60 lbs and was hungry all the time.I also had headaches and body aches, dry skin and a bloated tummy most days.
Since I switched over to low carb, all of these ailments have gone away. I'm also in a good mood. I've been losing weight and inches without really trying and I'm happy. It's a beautiful thing
Amazing what settling your blood sugar can do for you. I may not be diabetic, but I believe I may have been suffering with many of the same issues that diabetics suffer from, the only difference is my body makes too much insulin all the time so my blood sugars were always on a roller coaster.
Now during the course of the conversation, I brought up my hypoglycemia to both my parents. They can attest to that fact as they used to have to deal me when I would crash, get dizzy and cranky. They remember watching me during a soccer game or swim match nearly pass out from my blood sugar getting too low. They might not be as aware of now, but as an adult I've been a carb/sugar addict and have had problems with it.
My mother is so supportive of what I'm doing now which is great, but she is unfortunately uninformed about the details of what I am eating and doing. She was doing her best to tell me that LC is fine, but I should still be avoiding fat because of my family history of heart disease and high cholesterol.
Back in the day, I would have gotten into it with her. Today I just smiled and said "Well you can believe that if you like. I don't so I'm not going to eat any bread or sugar, but I am going to eat bacon, steak and what not because I feel better." Saying that made her shut up pretty quickly. I think I am going to loan her a few of my books and point her into the direction of the low carb masses so she can educate herself regarding this lifestyle.
So I might not be diabetic, but I will surely eat like one with a big grin on my face and a whole plate of bacon!
